Web Resources for the Skye Ridge

The following table contains most of the more interesting web links about the Skye Ridge.

Information Sites

Needle Sports

Climbing shop - has info about the ridge with tips.

RockFax

General climbing site with discussion groups. Also publish a "miniGuide" to the ridge that is full of valuable facts.

Weather sites

Weather forecasting for mountain areas is very fickle (much like the weather) and looking at five different sources will often produce five different forecasts! Try and be as flexible as you can in planning as good weather forecast on Thursday morning may be thunderstorms by the evening.

Online Weather

I have found this to be the most pessimistic of the weather sites. On the other hand, personal experience has tended to bear this out!

Nevissport

Simple text based forecast.

Web Cams

North Cuillin

A webcam looking at Sgurr nan Gillean from Sligachan.

Personal Accounts

These sites are general accounts of attempts, successful and otherwise on the ridge. Some are quite colourful, others make you wonder how the participants managed to complete their traverse.

David Walsh

An account from before the demise of the Gendarme on Sgurr nan Gillean - accurately predicting its demise.

ScotClimb

An account of the first Northern Irish attempt on the BGR.

Scottish Mountain guide

Some good photos of the ridge along with a few tips. This is in three parts: follow the links for the other sections.

Cuillin Scrambling

Not the ridge as such but a succession of scrambles around and over it.

Dublin University Climbing Club

An account of an unsuccessful attempt in 2000. Indicates why being both fit and lucky is often necessary.

John Daly

An interesting personal account of a two day traverse in 2005. Includes a couple of videos of their time on the ridge.

Books

Gordon Stainforth

The personal site of the author of a major book on the Cuillin.

Skye Scrambles

A Scrambling guide.

Skye and the Hebrides (SMC)

SMC guidebook to the Cuillin. This is a rock climbing guide as opposed to a specific guide to the ridge.

Scrambles in Skye

A scrambling guide.

If anyone has other links to personal accounts or information pages I would be only too pleased to include them.
